Your dental estimate: questions and insurance paperwork

What to clarify on an estimate, which questions to ask the practice and what to send your insurer before treatment.

General administrative information. Your contract and your insurer’s decision determine reimbursement.

An estimate and insurance cover are different

An estimate describes proposed care and its estimated cost. It helps you understand what is being suggested and prepare your questions before making a decision. It does not, by itself, confirm the amount your insurance will reimburse.

The final cost depends on the examinations needed, the extent of care and the options agreed with your dentist. The practice’s indicative fees provide a guide to common care; they do not replace an estimate tailored to your situation.

Questions to ask the practice

Ask what the listed services mean and which stages of care they relate to. If a line or term is unclear, ask for an explanation before accepting treatment. Clarify any laboratory costs and what changes might require the estimate to be revised.

Reception can help with organisational or payment enquiries. Discuss treatment choices and alternatives with your dentist. Keep a copy of the document and write down anything you still need to clarify.

Prepare your request to the insurer

Find your policy, exact product and applicable conditions. Send the estimate to your insurer and ask whether prior approval is required. Ask what you may need to pay yourself and which supporting documents will be needed later.

Cover cannot be established from the insurer’s name or an advertised percentage alone. Limits, waiting periods, deductibles and exclusions in your contract may apply. Our dental insurance page explains the general framework and the questions to check.

Keep written confirmation

Ask your insurer for written confirmation before committing on the assumption that costs will be reimbursed. Keep its response with the estimate and invoices. If the proposed treatment changes, check whether the confirmation still applies to the revised estimate.

The practice can provide documents needed for an enquiry according to the situation. The insurer decides whether costs are covered. An explanation from reception does not replace that decision.
