Key points
- Professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar remaining on or around teeth.
- The scope of care and instruments depend on deposits, gums and existing restorations.
- Cleaning, a dental check-up and gum treatment address different needs.
- Visit frequency is individual rather than the same for everyone.
Plaque and tartar
Plaque forms on teeth and around the gum line. When it hardens into tartar, ordinary brushing cannot remove it. The professional assesses where deposits have built up and the condition of the surrounding tissues.
During the visit
Cleaning is adapted to the deposits, gum condition, sensitivity and any crowns or implants. The team can explain the instruments used and discuss areas that are difficult to clean at home.
Choosing the right appointment
A hygiene visit does not replace a dental examination when symptoms or other concerns need assessment. Gum disease may require a different evaluation and plan. Describe your concerns when booking.
How often?
The interval between visits depends on your oral health, deposits, risk factors and home care. Your dentist or dental hygienist can recommend an interval after examining you.
Between visits
Daily brushing and cleaning between the teeth remain central. Ask which tools and technique suit your mouth, particularly around restorations or implants.
After cleaning
Temporary sensitivity or gum tenderness can occur. Contact the practice if symptoms are persistent or concerning. A cleaning does not change the intrinsic colour of teeth as whitening does.
Dental hygiene and professional cleaning: common questions
How often should I have my teeth cleaned?
The interval depends on your oral health and individual assessment.
Is scaling painful?
Sensitivity varies. Tell the professional if you are uncomfortable so the approach can be adjusted.
Why do my gums bleed?
Bleeding has several possible causes and should be assessed if it persists.
Can I remove tartar myself?
Hardened tartar should be removed professionally; avoid scraping your teeth at home.
Does cleaning whiten teeth?
Removing surface deposits can reveal the existing tooth shade, but it does not bleach natural teeth.
Can teeth be cleaned around an implant?
Yes, but the assessment and instruments must be adapted to the implant and surrounding tissues.
How much does dental cleaning cost in Geneva?
The price depends on the care required. Ask the practice for a personalised estimate.
